EWB-Philly and EWB-Temple University traveled to El Salvador May 20-27 for a successful phase of implementation!

Date: 7/15/14

Installation of the new water supply & distribution piping was completed. Points along the new line we intended to test on the distribution system were done so, and all provide water!

The Temple team successfully analyzed water samples from the elementary school and performed surveying to evaluate possibly improving the rainwater collection system.

We also assessed the need for improved wood stoves and inspection of our newly constructed storage tank.

Here is our daily implementation log w/ details of this recent trip (and past trips):

Next steps: traveling in July to install the pump VFD (for efficient energy use) and further evaluation of the newly connection portion of the water distribution system (surveying the receipts of the community, proposing tweaks where needed).

Long-term: educational programs on water conservation/use, investing remaining health issues within the community. New members are welcome to join the team! There is much more work to do in addition to the “engineering” component.

A team plans to travel in May for the second phase of implementation, which includes construction of valve boxes outside the existing and our newly completed concrete storage tank. The trip will additionally focus on the tank’s connecting pipe installation and protection along the sloping concrete roadway which leads to the community center of Las Delicias.

Technical Mentor Request from EWB-Princeton
Date: 12/31/12

ATTENTION professionals!!! The EWB Princeton University chapter needs 1-2 technical mentors for their water project in Peru, with the anticipation that mentor(s) will be available to travel next summer. Email if interested, minimum 1-year commitment required The request in their words are as follows:

The Peru team is currently working on a water system in Pitajaya, a small community in the Andean region of Peru. A short video about our project is available here: We just began implementation during a one-month trip this summer, with about two more years of work remaining. As a university chapter, our team generally does design during the school year, and then travels for implementation trips during summers. Due to the technical considerations of our system, we are always looking for direction with our design, as well as assistance with community relations or other aspects of development.

Most importantly, we will likely have an open position to travel with our team as a Professional Mentor during the Summer of 2013 (and possibly early 2013)–we’d love to talk about such opportunities. We can also arrange contact by email, phone, skype, or even in person as is convenient.

Philippines Project Update
Date: 12/30/12

EWB-MAP sent 6 team members to Apatut for site assessment and testing over the course of 3 weeks in October-November . The following activities were completed: a community-wide survey (noting water source access/locations), water quality testing of shallow irrigation wells, visit of the deep well drilled earlier this year with further investigation of viability, conducted a chlorine treatment test using a biologically impacted water sample. EWB canvassed materials suppliers for pumps and tanks in San Fernando, EWB completed a detailed map of the school in support of a small scale school system (for eventual incorporation into GPS) points.

At this time, we’re looking at three alternatives: (1) Install a series of shallow wells across the community and pump to either a central tank or localized tanks ily; (2) Connect to the Water District’s main located in the highway adjacent to the community entrance (very expensive ; (3) Considering the deep well, after additional structural (casing), yield, and water quality investigations.

The plan is for another trip in early 2013. You can visit our travel blog at:

El Salvador Project Update
Date: 12/28/12

Phase 1 of implementation (storage tank construction) has been ongoing throughout the summer, with multiple EWB-MAP travel teams spread out over the duration to inspect and assist with construction. The final summer team will travel to Las Delicias August 8-14 to complete the tank, and begin laying out the valve box and connecting water discharge piping. We will return to the community for pump installations later in early-Fall. You can view the implementation/travel log (along with photos taken during construction) recorded by the El Salvador project team at
